Challenge accepted! For those who say kyara/kinam oil is impossible to find, you are wrong! We went directly to the source—the oldest place in Asia where kyara/kinam was mastered and sold. The principles of kyara and kōdō were significantly developed on Awaji Island, home to some of the oldest shops and factories that account for over 70% of Japan's incense production and a large portion of top-quality incense in Asia.
Some of the oldest masters, who have practiced their craft for generations, reside on this island, perfecting their art to an unimaginable level. Their dedication, patience, and love for their craft are unmatched.
We didn't contact anyone online or try to source things overseas. If you've ever been there, you know that doesn’t work! We personally traveled to Awaji Island to ask, learn, and search for some of the most amazing treasures. These aromatic treasures will elevate your experience and deepen your understanding of beauty and art through the world of incense.
The truth is, this journey was not easy, cheap, or simple. For most of the terminology used in the art of incense or to describe specific aromatic terms, Google Translate is ineffective.
We not only hired a specialized translator fluent in both English and Japanese for accurate understanding, but we also engaged a guide to help us find the oldest and most respected shops, factories, and experts in this field.
To make a long story short, we invested significant time, effort, and resources to provide you with something we can unequivocally declare as the best in the world.
This is 100% Japanese kyara/kinam oil, personally sourced from Awaji Island, from the private collection of a collector and kōdō master. He was only willing to offer us half of his supply—less than 100 ml—after learning about our history, legacy, and dedication. We aim to share these treasures with as many people as possible to shed light on this beautiful art form.
The gentleman explained that in the past, when they made beads, jewelry, and crafts from kyara and kinam, the remaining residue was collected. Craftsmen would gather small batches of the residue and wood powder, which would later be mixed with high-quality jinko agarwood selected by a kōdō master for its sour and bitter scent characteristics, vital to resembling kyara/kinam.
This mixture is combined in equal parts (50/50) and cooked over a slow fire for four days. It requires patience and constant attention—if you sleep for just a couple of hours, you risk losing everything!
The final oil is unlike anything we have ever smelled, and likely anything you have encountered. It is not just an oil or a perfume; it’s an elixir, a treasure, a story! Each sniff reveals the time, effort, and dedication that went into its creation.
The complexity and depth are unmatched; even after a clean palate, each sniff offers new dimensions and complexities. We are all trained experts, yet we kept discovering new notes and accords as if the oil were alive and changing. When we asked the kōdō master about this, he explained, “It is not the oil that is changing; it is your own senses that are transforming because of it.”
He offered us a small cup of green tea and instructed us to smell the oil again deeply. We looked at each other in astonishment—what kind of sorcery is this? The kōdō master explained, “It’s not meant to be understood. That’s the beauty of it! Like life itself, just enjoy it. Don’t ask too many questions.”
We are grateful, not only to the gentleman who made this treasure available for others to enjoy but also for the generosity and beauty we experienced on Awaji Island. Everyone we encountered was polite, respectful, and helpful.
Creators, collectors, and connoisseurs—don't miss out! This will be gone quickly, and once it is, those who have it will possess a treasure that will appreciate in value over time. I cannot emphasize this enough.
We made this as reasonable as possible given the rarity of the raw material. We are passing this on to you as we received it; our total amount is already minimal and high in price, making profitability unrealistic. We are sharing our savings with you, sparing you the time, effort, and cost to obtain this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The First Nose: Distinguished dark kinam, sour herbal notes, and a hint of honey that lightly touches the nostrils and throat, vibrant with dark woody undertones of cedar and sandalwood, evoking dark rocky mountains and humid jungles with towering trees.
The Second Nose: A herbal, slightly medicinal aroma, clean and vivid, with honey and vanilla hints, along with touches of lotus and lilies.
The Closing Nose: A near-skin scent of clean woodiness, with a subtle leather and earthiness reminiscent of dark ambergris or cherry with chocolate.
